Nigeria cannot rely on a single energy source – Finnish envoy

The Finland Ambassador to Nigeria, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury has said it will be risky for Nigeria to continue to rely on a single energy generation source, adding that it was time the country gives a precise attention to renewable energy sources.

Speaking in her opening remarks at the 2016 edition of the Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo (NAEE) in Abuja, Suomela-Chowdhury noted that no single form of electricity generation has proven to be enough for any country of the world. She noted countries have often supplemented with alternative sources like renewable energy solutions.

According to her, the future of power generation across the globe was taking a new phase of off-grid solutions, and that countries were beginning to rationalize the economics of building large centralized power grid systems.

“There is a need for diversification. No one form of energy generation will solve the energy issues of countries, not in Nigeria, not in Finland, there have to be alternatives to augment,” said Suomela-Chowdhury.

She further stated: “The future might be off-grid. Small might be beautiful because people are not so interested in the big centralized grids anymore.”
